Notes from the Archives: Front Page News
Fifty years ago on November 5, 1954 St. Anne’s made front page news of The Evening Capital by launching a $200,000 drive seeking funds for improvements to the parish house and St. Luke’s Chapel, Eastport. The parish house renovations included razing of the older part of the of the parish house forward of the auditorium, renovating the rectory next door, and joining the two buildings with a three story structure housing classrooms and meeting rooms.
The November 13, 1954 issue of the Capital ran an article on the front page announcing that close to 75 per cent of the goal had been reached. On Monday, November 22, 1954 front page headlines read: “St. Anne’s Building Fund Campaign Goes Over Top In Drive For $200,000.”
The Capital cost five cents. Fifty years later the Capital costs 35 cents, and the rectory needs renovations.
Thanks to Glenwood Gibbs for sending these articles to the Archives.
