Meet the Ancestors: Peter Hagner
Peter Hagner (1772-1850)
Peter Hagner was born in Philadelphia in 1772 and died in 1850. He was appointed by George Washington to be the clerk of the Treasury Department and became the third auditor of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He lived most of his life in Washington, D.C., and was known as the “watchdog of the Treasury”, having served for 56 years, from George Washington’s administration to that of Zachary Taylor. He was married to Frances Randall (1787-1863), daughter of John Randall, architect, mayor, owner of Middleton’s Tavern. Frances donated the stained-glass window, “Presenting Jesus to Simeon at the Temple in Jerusalem,” to St. Anne’s in Peter’s memory.
