Marching in the DC World Pride Parade with Fellow Episcopalians

I had the opportunity to march with the Episcopal Diocese of Washington in the World Pride parade in DC on June 7. It was fun to meet people from parishes all around the DC area that are welcoming like St. Anne's. There's a special joyful energy at Pride that is unique in my experience. LGBTQ+ people and their allies from all walks of life come together to celebrate who they are and feel a sense of belonging. It is very important that the Episcopal Church and other faith communities participate in Pride so that LGBTQ+ people who may have had negative experiences in unwelcoming faith communities can see that there is a place for them. It makes a powerful statement when many Episcopal parishes, including clergy, march in the parade decked out in colorful Pride outfits and regalia. We received an enthusiastic response from the crowds throughout the entire 2-mile parade route, which took us through the heart of the nation's capital, past the monuments and government buildings. It felt like the town was ours for a day. It was a thrill, and I'm looking forward to celebrating Pride in Annapolis with St. Anne's in October!
