Caring for God’s Creation

Do you remember the enchantment of simply being outdoors in Nature? In lush forests, inspiring mountains, quiet lakes, and stormy seas. Among the miracles of flora and fauna – including us. Caring for Creation means ensuring that we humans do not threaten our beautiful environment and those who depend on it any more than we have already.

But what can we do to preserve this treasure? On a personal level, we can reduce our individual environmental footprint (recycle, limit pollutants, cut carbon emissions etc.). On a societal level, we can pass laws to support livelihoods in industry and agriculture without harming the environment.

During 35 years with the United Nations Development Program, I managed projects to set up a global system to monitor greenhouse gases, improve industrial standards, reduce methane emissions from rice production and reduce slash-and-burn agriculture. Not all the scientists and engineers I worked with were people of faith, but they, like Einstein, stood in awe of God’s Creation and sought to preserve it.

When members of the Maryland Episcopal Public Policy Network (MRPPN) lobby for environment-friendly legislation, we are seeking to “protect the sanctity and wholeness of our environment and to protect the health of all persons from unsafe and unhealthy environmental exposures.”
