Is Larry Molinaro the Phantom of the Organ?
The Phantom of the Opera was a brilliant composer and musician. This sounds like our own organist, Larry Molinaro: brilliant musician and composer of his own score to the 1925 silent film Phantom of the Opera.
On October 30 at 7 p.m., Larry will once again amaze and astonish us at the magnificent Freiburger organ as he plays and improvises on his own score to this classic film. Don’t miss this beloved St. Anne’s tradition and the rare opportunity to experience silent cinema as it was meant to be heard.
When asked why he loves to improvise this score for a live audience, the organist replied:
““Proud as I am of last year’s film release, I love accompanying Phantom live for an audience. With no set score, I can respond to their reactions and weave in musical ideas I’ve gathered throughout the year—and that’s always a thrill. In fact, I’m dictating this to my phone as I walk back from a recital at the Gothenburg organ festival. The program explored the links between 19th-century French opera and church music and gave me plenty of fresh ideas—some of which are sure to turn up on Friday, October 30!””
Don’t miss this beloved St. Anne’s tradition and the rare opportunity to experience silent cinema as it was meant to be heard.
