Meet the Ancestors: Nicholas (Maccubbin) Carroll (1751-1812)
Nicholas (Maccubbin) Carroll (1751-1812)
Nicholas Maccubbin Carroll was born on March I, 1750 (1751) to Nicholas Maccubbin and Mary Clare Carroll, the sister of Charles Carroll. His father was a member of the merchant class and served as High Sheriff of Annapolis for a time. He also served as a captain with the Independent Companies of Anne Arundel County Militia during the Revolutionary War. Nicholas was the eldest of the Maccubbin’s children. When his uncle, Charles Carroll the Barrister died leaving no children of his own, his will stipulated that if Nicholas would change his last name to Carroll, he would inherit his uncle’s vast estate after the death of his aunt, Margaret Tilghman Carroll. Nicholas and his younger brother, James, agreed and legally changed their last names to Carroll. Nicholas married Anne Jennings in 1783 with whom he had five children. Nicholas served in the Lower House and was a part of the Maryland Convention that ratified the federal constitution in 1788. He also served as a Justice with the Anne Arundel courts, a councilman, alderman and Mayor of Annapolis during his lifetime. Unfortunately, Nicholas proceeded his aunt Margaret in death and so, never inherited the estate of his uncle. James, the younger brother who had also changed his name to Carroll, became the sole heir of the estate.
